An album of tunes by Tim Berne played on acoustic guitar is not a thing that I realized I needed. Gregg Belisle-Chi (produced by Berne and David Torn) does something remarkable and organic on Koi, simultaneously distilling Berne’s compositions to their essential elements and imbuing them with a new kind of life.
A great collection of Tim Berne compositions rendered with exquisite clarity on solo guitar. These interpretations emphasis Berne's melodic genius, partly because the voices come across with more clarity on guitar than when these same pieces are played by ensembles. Belisle-Chi's command of colour and dynamics is also really impressive. It's not ideal through headphones, because for some strange reason it was recorded (or maybe just mixed?) in mono. So play it through speakers, loudly.
Comes in a beautiful slim card board sleeve, design by Steve Byram, photos by Tim Berne, opens up like a book with album credits and the CD slides into the packaging from the spine end so as not to fall out in your car by accident.

From Gregg Belisle-chi: "KOI is very near and dear to me. Tim Berne has long been a hero of mine and, upon moving to New York, was one of my bucket list collaborators. I'm elated to be releasing this record of his music, produced by him and David Torn (who also mixed and mastered it beautifully.)
This record is a brand new endeavor for me: a collection of solo acoustic guitar renditions of his masterful compositions. I remember hearing "forage," Matt Mitchell's breathtaking solo piano record of Tim's music, in 2017 and thinking to myself "Goddam, wouldn't it be amazing if a guitar player did this too?" I didn't expect that guitarist to be me, but with Tim's blessing and guidance, we were able to make it happen...and I think it turned out extremely well.
All in all, this record is a dream come true: collaborating with Tim, having a recording enhanced by David Torn, album art designed by the one and only Steve Byram."
What more could I ask for?
